Continuous Positive Airway Pressure: CPAP

CPAP is an acronym for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. Sleep disturbance commonly associated with snoring and sleep apnoea occurs when the airway becomes unstable during sleep. The vibration of the airway alone is thought to have the potential to disturb sleep, as does the increased drive to breathe when the airway is sucked completely shut. More on OSA...

CPAP works by increasing air pressure in the airway through the use of a small blower unit attached to a nasal mask or mouthpiece. The increase in pressure ensures the airway maintains constant positive pressure, and is supported open throughout the entire sleep cycle in the same way an airport windsock is held open in a breeze. This allows the patient to breathe normally without any snoring and without the airway collapsing. More on CPAP...
